For the Week of 5/18/2018
Democrats in statehouses across the country are fighting to move America forward. In case you missed it, here are some statehouse highlights from this week:
This week the DLCC released a new video breaking down the importance of winning at the state level in November. Narrated by U.S. Senator Cory Booker, the video highlights the DLCC’s special election wins and the importance of expanding state Democrats’ “blue wall” in the Trump era. Check out the video here and be sure to share it with your friends!
On Tuesday night, the DLCC claimed yet another special election victory, marking the 41st state legislative seat to flip from red to blue since Trump was elected. Pennsylvania state Rep.-elect Helen Tai bested her Republican opponent in the race for HD-178 – ending Republicans’ 35-year-hold on the district. The Bucks County district provides the latest evidence of America’s suburbs shifting in Democrats' favor. The DLCC named Tai to its list of Spotlight Races, and its field, political, and digital departments worked consistently with national partners and staffers on the ground to ensure strategic Get Out the Vote efforts were successful in the final five days.
This week, North Carolina became the latest Republican-controlled state to have its teachers march on the state capital. Thousands of North Carolina teachers missed school Wednesday to rally at the state legislative building in Raleigh, calling for better pay, benefits and more state spending per student. For years, state Republicans have sabotaged our education systems and failed to protect teachers, who dedicate their lives to serving their communities. Now teachers in red states are fighting back. Educators are flooding the ballot and running as Democrats in red states like Texas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and beyond. With Democrats setting candidate recruitment records nationwide and educators stepping up to run themselves, we can fix the damage done to our schools by turning red states blue.
This week Maryland Democrats led the way to become the 11th state to ban “gay conversion therapy” for minors, a huge win for the rights of LGBTQ Americans. Of the 11 states that have banned the widely discredited practice, seven are Democratic trifectas and the other four states have Democrats in control of at least one legislative chamber or a governorship. This November, Democrats are only 17 seats away from flipping 7 chambers from red to blue. With more state legislatures under Democratic leadership, we can work to enact legislation that protects the rights and well-being of LGBTQ Americans nationwide – not just in specific states.
This week it was announced that U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren would join the DLCC’s fight to win back state legislatures and end partisan gerrymandering. The DLCC is thrilled to partner with Sen. Warren as we work to elect more state Democrats and flip legislative chambers from red to blue ahead of critical 2020 redistricting. With more Democrats in statehouses nationwide, we can end prejudicial voter ID laws, Republican disenfranchisement practices, and advance legislation that protects the voting rights of every American. With Democrats only 17 seats away from flipping 7 chambers this November and 41 flipped seats already, the DLCC has launched our #FlipEverything initiative this week to underscore our commitment to building Democratic strength in states.

"Individuals matter and majorities matter. The DLCC’s work to elect Democrats and win more legislative majorities is crucial for our democracy. Flipping the state of Washington from red to blue with just my one vote enabled us to enact progressive policies into law—the [Washington] Voting Rights Act, addressing gun violence, protecting net neutrality, passing equal pay, and so much more. I am proud to stand with the DLCC as we work together to flip seats from red to blue this November."
