For the Week of 10/20/2017
Democrats in statehouses across the country are fighting to move America forward. In case you missed it, here are some statehouse highlights from this week:
This week, NBC News’ Chris Jansing traveled to Virginia to meet with candidates for the Virginia House of Delegates Kellen Squire and DLCC Spotlight Race candidate, Jennifer Carroll Foy. From teachers to public defenders, journalists to veterans, and everyone in between, this year’s slate of Virginia House candidates is more robust than ever: Democrats are running in more districts and women make up nearly half of the slate. Crucial state House elections are less than three weeks away and the DLCC is fighting to bring Democrats’ winning momentum in legislative special elections to the Commonwealth. Check out races.dlcc.org to learn more about Jennifer Carroll Foy and other Virginia DLCC Spotlight Races.
This past Tuesday, the DLCC celebrated yet another special election win! Massachusetts State Senator-elect Paul Feeney carried the competitive special election for the Bristol & Norfolk Senatorial District, besting his Republicans and Independent challengers. The district, targeted by Republicans, is a crucial win for Democrats working to push back against Trump and Republicans’ dangerous agenda. The Democratic-led Massachusetts legislature recently passed important legislation to ban bump stocks (the device used in the recent Las Vegas mass shooting to turn semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic weapons), ensure women maintain access to affordable birth control and health care, provide protections and accommodations for pregnant workers, reform the criminal justice system, prevent foreign meddling in state elections, and more. With strong Democratic legislatures leading the way, state progress can lead to national solutions. The DLCC looks forward to future victories in Washington, Virginia, New Jersey, and beyond.
Former vice president Joe Biden has endorsed four Democratic candidates for the Virginia House of Delegates as well as Manka Dhinrga, the Washington State Democrat and DLCC Spotlight Race candidate running to flip the state Senate to Democratic control! In Virginia, Biden endorsed DLCC Spotlight Race candidates Jennifer Carroll Foy (HD-2), Danica Roem (HD-13), and Elizabeth Guzman (HD-31), along with Democrats running in targeted races like David Reid (HD-32) and incumbent Delegate John Bell (HD-87). Join Joe and the DLCC in our support of state Democrats!
In 2016, Nevada Democrats successfully flipped control of both chambers in the state legislature - the only state to do so in the nation. Republicans are desperate to turn back the clock and reclaim control, so they’ve launched three baseless and shameful recall efforts against State Senators Joyce Woodhouse (SD5), Nicole Cannizzaro (SD6), and Patricia Farley (SD8) - all members of the Democratic caucus. The recalls have sparked outrage as reported cases of harassment and intimidation from Republican signature gatherers further undermine Republicans’ scheme. The DLCC is on the ground and working in coordination with the team in Nevada and legislative leaders to prevent this shameful tactic from gaining any more traction.
This past Monday, federal judges convened a trial in Greensboro to (again) examine the legality of North Carolina’s Republican-drawn maps. The case is similar to the case currently before the Supreme Court involving the constitutionality of Wisconsin legislative and congressional district lines. This is not the first time North Carolina Republicans’ maps have been challenged for partisan gerrymandering: In May, the Supreme Court called out North Carolina Republicans for racially gerrymandering two congressional districts and in June, 28 state legislative districts. The nation’s highest court ruled that the maps must be redrawn, and, despite Republican push back and attempts to circumvent the court’s direct order, they were - kind of. Now these maps are BACK in court because the districts are “so uncompetitive they violate the constitutional rights of voters whose partisan viewpoints are in the minority.” In 2020, a new census will be done and a new process of redistricting legislative lines will begin. The DLCC is working in partnership with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee to elect Democrats to statehouses nationwide so we can repair our democracy and return to a system where voters pick their politicians—not the other way around.
Five Reasons Democrats Are Poised To Make Gains in the Virginia House of Delegates. -- Medium post by Tom Perriello
"The states are going to have to step up in ways the federal government should be stepping up…The only hope for leadership we have here is at the state level."
At a campaign event in Virginia, former vice president Joe Biden underscored the importance of the DLCC’s mission: electing Democrats to state legislatures across the country.
