The Friday Five - September 22nd, 2017

For the Week of 9/22/2017

Democrats in statehouses across the country are fighting to move America forward. In case you missed it, here are some statehouse highlights from this week:

1.    Democrats are getting some very good news in special elections

State Democrats had two more opportunities to flip Republican-held legislative seats last week and we seized the opportunity. Special elections in the New Hampshire state House and Oklahoma state House have the scoreboard at Dems: 6, GOP: 0 as the DLCC and state Democrats continue to build a winning momentum and improve on 2016 electoral performances ahead of upcoming elections in Florida, Washington, and Virginia and the 2018 midterms. Click through to this piece from Aaron Blake with the Washington Post to see just how well Democrats are doing in statehouse specials.

2.    Democrats Flip State House Seats In 2 Districts That Trump Won By Double Digits

Diving into state Democrats' recent wins in New Hampshire and Oklahoma, Daniel Marans with the HuffPost examines the numbers in this breakdown of last Tuesday's special elections where two DLCC Spotlight Race candidates flipped districts from red to blue. In New Hampshire, community leader and Representative-elect Charlie St. Clair scored a decisive win (56-44) in this historically red district that went for Trump by 16 points in 2016. In Oklahoma, school teacher and Representative-elect Jacob Rosecrants carried the district with over 60% of the vote, improving on Hillary Clinton's 2016 performance in the district by a whopping 19 points. The DLCC is proud of the work we did to support these great candidates and expand Democratic strength in these chambers.

3.   Recall campaign propaganda is false, hypocritical and dangerous

Last November, Nevadans elected Democratic majorities to the state Assembly and the state Senate, flipping the chambers from red to blue. Democrats immediately went to work and delivered one of the legislature’s most successful sessions ever, passing landmark legislation to protect health care access, expand environmental protections, and safeguard education and women’s health services. But now, barely nine months later, Republicans and special interests desperate to undo the session’s monumental achievements are conspiring to subvert the will of the people by recalling three women senators. In this opinion piece from Nevada's Jon Ralston (The Nevada Independent), Ralston calls out the recall effort for what it truly is: a last-ditch effort by Nevada Republicans to get a "redo" on their 2016 losses. The DLCC is committed to standing up for the state's rightful Democratic majorities and will continue to shine a light on Republicans' underhanded efforts to steal seats.

4.   New Mom of Twins Running for Virginia House of Delegates

Public defender, champion for criminal justice reform, advocate for public education, new mom, and candidate for Virginia House District 2: The DLCC is proud to support Spotlight Race candidate Jennifer Carroll Foy in her fight to bring better policies and reform to the Virginia Legislature. Check out this inspiring interview with Jennifer and learn more about her campaign!

5.   Inside Danica Roem's Historic Campaign as a Transgender Woman in Trump's America

In the Trump era of Republican extremism, discriminatory legislation is working its way from the statehouse to the White House and vice versa. Enter Danica Roem, a former journalist running for Virginia House District 13 against "Bigot Bob" (a 25-year incumbent and sponsor of multiple anti-LGBTQ bills) who could become the first openly transgender person elected and seated to a state legislature. Danica and her army of volunteers have knocked on more than 26,000 doors so far in an effort to spread the word that she is the right person for the job. Her campaign is focused on fixing local issues -- like traffic and Route 28 mayhem -- and she promises to bring new solutions to the table. Check out this profile of DLCC Spotlight Race candidate Danica Roem in Cosmopolitan and learn more about her campaign!

Dems 6 — GOP 0. And We’re Just Getting Started… -- Medium Post from DLCC

"For far too long survivors of domestic violence and families torn apart by violence called upon this legislature for help...Today they get their answer."

Earlier this week, Rhode Island Democrats passed a litany of progressive bills that will better the lives of women, working families, and community heroes like firefighters. One of these bills, sponsored by South Kingstown Democrat Rep. Teresa Tanzi, will help remove guns from the hands of domestic abusers. Check out this article from the Providence Journal to find out why gun-control advocates and past victims of domestic violence cheered when the Democratic-led legislature passed the bill.
