Statement from DLCC Executive Director on Janus v. AFSCME
WASHINGTON -- Today Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) Executive Director Jessica Post issued the following statement following the Supreme Court of the United States' ruling in the case of Janus v. AFSCME:
“The Supreme Court ruling is disappointing. This decision goes against what Democrats have spent so long fighting to protect - the freedom of working people to join together in strong unions to speak up for themselves and their communities. We believe it is an essential right to be able to form a union in order to advocate on behalf of workers to ensure they are paid a living wage, can have retirement security, health care benefits, and paid leave to care for loved ones.
"Republicans have rigged the system in their favor, and we have to work overtime to show them that the power of the people is greater than the people in power. We will continue to work with our partners and state leaders to elect more Democrats who will pass laws in their state legislatures to protect unions, raise the minimum wage, pass paid family leave, ensure equal pay, and help make sure all families can thrive .”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs, which has led to Democrats flipping 44 seats since Trump's inauguration. The DLCC is building on Democrats’ winning momentum and continues to lay the groundwork for substantial gains in 2018 in statehouses nationwide. State Democrats recently scored critical victories in Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Florida, Minnesota, and elsewhere, while also leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies.
